Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin. This market, driven by individual predictions and real-money stakes, can sometimes offer a more accurate assessment of the likely outcome, especially as new information emerges. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, information access, or risk appetite among market participants and sportsbook operators.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds constantly adapt to new information and changing sentiment.
