Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by professional oddsmakers, while this market is driven by individuals expressing their beliefs through trading. Historically, prediction markets have demonstrated accuracy in forecasting event outcomes, sometimes outperforming traditional methods. However, it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities, and discrepancies can arise due to differing information or biases. Comparing the two can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the potential results.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand, reflecting the aggregated predictions of all participants. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment.
