Prediction market odds often reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks primarily cater to casual bettors and may incorporate a 'vig' or commission, this market allows participants to express their beliefs about the outcome directly. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of expertise among market participants and the ability to hedge positions. It's common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information, potentially offering a more accurate forecast than sportsbook odds.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each possible outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. The market's efficiency depends on the volume of trading and the diversity of opinions represented among participants.
