Often, prediction market odds reflect a 'wisdom of the crowd' that can differ from traditional sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds based on models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant number of people believe an outcome is more likely than sportsbooks suggest, the price will move accordingly. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, biases, or simply a larger and more diverse pool of participants contributing to this market. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform traditional odds over time.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the collective judgment of all participants, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's likelihood. This differs from fixed-odds betting, as the price adjusts based on demand.
