Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different kind of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market aims to represent the true probability as assessed by traders. This can lead to discrepancies, with prediction markets sometimes offering more favorable odds, especially when there's strong disagreement with the broader public perception. However, it's important to remember that both represent probabilities, and differences can arise due to varying information and analytical approaches. Comparing them can give a more comprehensive view of potential outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in different outcomes. The price of each share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and express their views, the prices adjust accordingly, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and reflects the aggregated predictions of its users.
