Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often incorporating information and analysis not immediately available to traditional sportsbooks. This can lead to differences in probabilities assigned to various outcomes. Sportsbooks may initially set odds based on team rankings and historical data, while this market allows for real-time adjustments based on breaking news, injuries, or shifts in public perception. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information than sportsbooks, potentially offering more accurate probabilities as the event approaches. However, discrepancies can also arise due to differing market participants and risk appetites.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the pricing mechanism on Polymarket. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly adapt to new information and reflect the collective intelligence of its participants.
