Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance their risk, while this market allows anyone to trade based on their own analysis. If there’s a significant difference, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both the prediction market and a sportsbook. However, it’s important to note that sportsbooks and this market have different costs and limitations, which can contribute to discrepancies in the odds.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current implied probability of a specific outcome is reflected in the share price, and traders adjust their positions based on new information and their own assessments of the event. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
