Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows participants to express their own beliefs and adjust probabilities based on new information. It's common to see discrepancies emerge, especially as new developments occur leading up to the event. Comparing these odds can reveal where the crowd believes there's value or mispricing relative to conventional wisdom.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event's likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is determined by the most recent trades and the overall demand for shares in that outcome.
