Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market’s prices are driven by traders directly expressing their beliefs about the outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise for informed traders. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information and adjust probabilities, potentially offering a more accurate forecast than static sportsbook lines. Examining both can provide a more comprehensive view of expectations.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a specific outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the market price adjusts, reflecting the collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The market’s efficiency is driven by the incentive for traders to accurately predict the outcome and profit from correct assessments.
