Typically, prediction market odds reflect a broader range of information and incentives than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market aggregates the wisdom of the crowd. If sportsbook odds show a clear favorite, it's interesting to see if this market agrees or if traders believe the sportsbook is mispricing the probability of a particular outcome. Discrepancies can arise from differing expert opinions, access to unique data, or simply varying risk appetites among participants.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in an outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, constantly adjusting as new information becomes available. The current price movements indicate how traders are interpreting available information about the match.
