Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an event occurring, as assessed by traders. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, this market allows for collective intelligence to influence pricing. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, information access, and risk tolerance among participants in each venue. It's common to see prediction market odds shift more rapidly in response to new information.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information and their own analysis. This creates a dynamic and efficient price discovery process.
