Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different kind of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, and may be influenced by promotional considerations. This market, however, represents the collective prediction of informed traders who have skin in the game. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, prediction markets can quickly adjust as new information emerges and traders react to it. It’s common to see differences in probabilities, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. The current price reflects what traders are willing to pay for a share representing the likelihood of a specific result in the Freitas vs Gibbs match.
