Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals trading based on their own information and beliefs. If there's a significant discrepancy between prediction market prices and sportsbook odds, it may indicate differing opinions on the likely outcome or varying levels of information available to each group. It’s common to see prediction markets more accurately forecast probabilities as events approach.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined entirely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's likelihood. This differs from fixed-odds betting where the sportsbook sets the price.
