Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market allows traders to directly assess the probabilities. Polls and analysts currently favor one player, but this market provides a dynamic view of probabilities as traders react to news and information. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, access to information, or simply variations in risk assessment among participants. It’s common to see prediction markets offer more competitive odds, especially as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting a higher perceived chance of success. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd, and any new information or shifts in sentiment will be immediately reflected in the market price. The volume traded also provides insight into the confidence level surrounding each outcome.
