Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may be influenced by factors like public betting patterns or risk management. This market, driven by individual traders on Polymarket, can incorporate a wider range of information and potentially identify mispricings relative to those found at sportsbooks. It's important to compare the implied probabilities from both sources to form a well-rounded view of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each player winning. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence in that result. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective prediction.
