Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks incorporate a profit margin into their odds, while this market is driven purely by traders’ beliefs. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, it may indicate that the market perceives a different probability of an outcome than the sportsbook. However, it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities based on different information and methodologies, and neither is inherently more accurate.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular player will win, the higher the price of shares representing that outcome will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
