Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals trading based on their own research and insights. If there’s a significant discrepancy between the two, it could indicate that prediction market traders have access to information or perspectives not fully considered by sportsbooks, or simply a different assessment of probabilities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its shares will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities accordingly, reflecting the collective intelligence of the traders.
