Prediction market odds often differ from those found at sportsbooks, reflecting the wisdom of the crowd and potentially incorporating information not yet priced into traditional odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is undervaluing or overvaluing a player’s chances, the prediction market odds will adjust accordingly. This can lead to discrepancies, offering opportunities for informed traders to potentially find value.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, indicating growing confidence. Conversely, increased selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
