Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own probabilities. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, arbitrage opportunities may arise for informed traders. However, it's important to remember that both represent probabilities of the same event, and neither guarantees a correct prediction. The market's collective assessment can sometimes be more accurate than initial sportsbook lines.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated and responsive to changing conditions. The market's depth and volume contribute to the accuracy of the implied probabilities.
