Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the views of many individual traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, the prediction market will likely move in the opposite direction. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before a lot of money has been wagered on either side, and these differences can present potential arbitrage opportunities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated and responsive to changing conditions.
