Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds due to varying information and incentives. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and profit margins, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise from differing levels of expertise, access to information, or simply differing opinions among participants. It’s common to see prediction markets incorporate information faster than sportsbooks, especially when new developments occur.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a specific outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
