Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on models and internal analysis, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when public opinion strongly favors one outcome. Comparing the two can reveal insights into where the “crowd” differs from professional oddsmakers, and whether value exists in either venue.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability, with higher prices indicating greater confidence in that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market depth—the number of shares available at different price points—also provides insight into the strength of conviction among traders. As more traders participate, the price tends to converge towards a more accurate representation of the event’s likelihood.
