Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on their own analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides and ensure profitability. This market, however, is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own information and beliefs. As a result, prediction market prices can sometimes be more accurate, especially when incorporating a wider range of factors than traditional bookmakers might consider. Discrepancies can also arise due to differing levels of liquidity and market efficiency.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, constantly updating as new information becomes available and opinions shift. The current trading volume indicates the level of interest and conviction surrounding the potential results.
