Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market relies on individuals wagering their own capital. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially early in the market's life cycle. These differences can stem from varying information access, biases, or simply differing interpretations of the same data. Observing these differences can be insightful for those seeking an edge in their predictions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of each share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the pricing mechanism.
