Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by the willingness of individuals to buy or sell shares representing the likelihood of each outcome. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before a significant amount of trading occurs. Analyzing these differences can be insightful, as both sources attempt to forecast the same event, but through different mechanisms.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The market's efficiency depends on the number of participants and the information they incorporate into their trading decisions.
