Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides. This market, however, allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome, and the odds adjust based on the collective wagers. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing the event, the prediction market odds may diverge, potentially offering a more accurate forecast. It's common to see differences, especially as new information emerges.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the aggregated sentiment of all participants, creating a dynamic and responsive assessment of the event's potential results. This continuous pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing opinions.
