Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is undervaluing a particular outcome, they may drive the price on Polymarket in the opposite direction. It’s common to see prediction markets offer more accurate probabilities, especially as an event approaches, due to the continuous flow of information and diverse perspectives.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a specific outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. The market’s efficiency is driven by arbitrage opportunities – traders attempting to profit from price discrepancies between Polymarket and external sources of information, like sports analysts or betting sites. This dynamic process helps to refine the market’s prediction.
