Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on the collective wisdom of traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is undervaluing a particular outcome, the odds here may diverge. It’s common to see differences, especially early in the market lifecycle, as information and sentiment evolve. Analyzing these discrepancies can highlight areas where the crowd disagrees with conventional wisdom.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective forecast. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is driven entirely by supply and demand, meaning that increased buying pressure will raise the price, while increased selling pressure will lower it, ultimately indicating the crowd’s expectation.
