Typically, prediction market odds reflect a broader range of information and incentives than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market aggregates the wisdom of the crowd. If sportsbook odds significantly differ from those found on Polymarket, it could indicate disagreement about the likely outcome or differing levels of information available to each group. It’s important to remember that both represent probabilities, but are derived through different mechanisms and may appeal to different types of bettors.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a specific outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of shares in this market is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and represents their collective forecast for the event. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust expectations.
