Prediction market odds often differ from traditional sportsbook odds, reflecting the wisdom of the crowd versus the assessments of professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks set lines to balance their risk and ensure profit, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the larger number of participants in a prediction market. It's common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information than sportsbooks, potentially offering more accurate probabilities as the event approaches. Examining these differences can reveal valuable insights into public perception.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, constantly adjusting based on new information and changing sentiment. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are always a current assessment of the likely result.
