Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert opinions, while this market aggregates the views of many individual traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can express that view through their trades, potentially causing the prediction market odds to diverge. It's common to see prediction markets more accurately reflect true probabilities, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the pricing on Polymarket.
