Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin. This market, driven by traders on Polymarket, represents a different perspective, potentially factoring in information not yet reflected in sportsbook lines. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, risk assessment, or simply varying opinions among bettors. It’s common to see prediction markets move more quickly to incorporate new information than traditional markets.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a specific player, the price increases, reflecting a growing expectation of their victory. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price, indicating decreasing confidence. This dynamic process ensures the market price reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
