Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds which may be influenced by factors like house bias or public perception. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources or analytical approaches. It’s common to see prediction markets move more efficiently as new information emerges, potentially offering a more accurate assessment of probabilities than initial sportsbook offerings. Examining both can provide a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the aggregated sentiment. Higher demand for shares in a specific outcome drives up its price, indicating increased confidence, while selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the current collective forecast.
