Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market represents the aggregated beliefs of informed traders. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, arbitrage opportunities may arise, as traders attempt to profit from the difference. Generally, prediction markets can sometimes offer more accurate forecasts, particularly when there's strong insider information or a large number of participants analyzing the event.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust expectations as the event approaches. The current price reflects the collective assessment of all traders on Polymarket.
