Often, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and often incorporate a profit margin, while this market is driven by traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, it may indicate that the market believes the sportsbook has mispriced the event. However, it’s important to remember that both represent different perspectives on the likelihood of various outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, creating a real-time probability assessment of the event. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The closer the event gets, the more the price will reflect new information and changing sentiment. Volume plays a key role, as higher volume generally indicates greater confidence in the price’s accuracy and a more liquid market.
