Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds which may be influenced by house biases or differing information sources. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to express their view and influence the price. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions on player form, potential upsets, or even external factors impacting performance. It's common to see prediction markets converge towards the 'true' probability as more information becomes available.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event's likelihood. This creates a dynamic and real-time estimation of the match's potential result, driven entirely by supply and demand.
