Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of prediction markets, where odds adjust rapidly with new information. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform traditional odds, especially when incorporating unique or hard-to-quantify factors.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the evolving consensus. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for these shares, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's likelihood.
