Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and to balance action, while this market reflects the collective wisdom of traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing an outcome, they can express that view by trading on Polymarket. This can lead to odds on Polymarket diverging from sportsbook lines, potentially identifying advantageous betting opportunities for informed individuals who compare the two. However, it's important to remember that both represent probabilities, and neither is guaranteed to be correct.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular player, the price of those shares increases, reflecting a higher implied probability of that player winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movements are driven by supply and demand, and the current prices on Polymarket represent the market's aggregated forecast. The volume traded also provides insight into the confidence level behind these predictions.
