Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on their own analysis and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, it may indicate that the market perceives information differently or has access to unique insights. It's important to remember that both represent probabilities, but are derived through distinct mechanisms and may not always align.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price can fluctuate rapidly based on new information or changes in sentiment, creating opportunities for traders to profit from accurate predictions. The volume of trading also influences price discovery, with higher volume generally indicating greater confidence in the market's assessment.
