Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when public sentiment strongly favors one outcome. Examining these differences can be insightful, revealing where the market anticipates value or where sportsbooks may be overconfident in their initial assessments.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where shares representing each possible outcome are bought and sold. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises accordingly. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined entirely by supply and demand, meaning it's a direct expression of collective belief about the match’s result.
