Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while this market aims to represent the true probability as assessed by traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information, biases within each group, and the incentive structures at play. If sportsbook odds significantly differ from those on Polymarket, it may signal that the market believes the sportsbook is mispricing the event or has overlooked key factors.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd, constantly adjusting as new information becomes available. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market remains responsive to changing perceptions and expectations.
