Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while Polymarket allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to differences in implied probabilities, especially as new information emerges. If there is significant disagreement between the two, it may indicate that the market believes the sportsbook’s odds are miscalibrated. However, it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities based on different information and participant biases, and this market is subject to its own unique dynamics.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares reflects the collective prediction of all participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts, providing a real-time estimate of the probability of each outcome. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares on Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or a central authority.
