Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market aims to reflect the true probability of an outcome as determined by traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or levels of expertise between market participants and sportsbook oddsmakers. If there's a significant difference, it might suggest that the market believes the sportsbook has mispriced the event, or vice versa, and presents a potential opportunity for informed traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market is entirely driven by supply and demand, meaning the price fluctuates based on the collective actions of all participants. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
