Often, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective that differs from traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on their own analysis, potentially incorporating biases or aiming to balance action on both sides. This market, however, is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own information and beliefs. While sportsbooks may adjust their odds closer to the event based on new information, the prediction market odds can provide an alternative view of the likely outcome, potentially identifying discrepancies or undervalued opportunities. It’s a useful comparison point for informed bettors.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or a central authority setting the odds.
