Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on their own analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can express that view by trading shares, driving the prediction market odds in a different direction. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before a lot of real-world information becomes available.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are traded, the price adjusts to reflect the collective sentiment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a 'yes' share, for example, represents the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. This dynamic pricing ensures the market stays responsive to new information and changing expectations regarding the Doldan vs Portoman match.
