Prediction market odds often reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set lines based on statistical models and public betting patterns, this market represents the wisdom of the crowd, where participants directly express their beliefs about the outcome. Often, prediction markets can be more accurate than sportsbook odds, particularly when there's significant public interest or access to specialized information. Discrepancies can arise due to differing incentives and the types of information considered when setting odds.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event's likelihood. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market remains responsive to changing conditions and provides a real-time estimate of the expected result.
