Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the views of many individual bettors. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying interpretations of the athletes’ capabilities. If significant differences emerge, arbitrage opportunities may present themselves, where traders can profit by exploiting the price variations between the two types of markets.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome of the Shibata vs Gontijo match. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a probability estimate. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares of a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, increased selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood.
