Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and need to account for profit margins, while this market is driven purely by traders’ beliefs about the likely outcome. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing an outcome, they can take the opposite position in this market, driving the odds closer to what they perceive as the true probability. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform traditional sportsbooks in accuracy, especially as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of each share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic process ensures that the market price reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
