Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while Polymarket allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when there’s strong public sentiment or information asymmetry. It’s common to see this market price in factors that sportsbooks might not immediately account for, such as subtle player form changes or less-publicized team news. Examining both sources can offer a more comprehensive view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market efficiently aggregates the collective wisdom of participants, reflecting their assessment of the available information. Trading volume and order book depth also influence price discovery.
