Prediction market odds often offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and profit margins, this market reflects the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying interpretations of the players’ form. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information, potentially offering more accurate probabilities than sportsbook odds, especially as the event approaches. Comparing these can be a useful exercise for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular player, the price increases, signaling growing confidence in their victory. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand, meaning that shifts in sentiment can quickly impact the odds. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system driven by the crowd.
